“LFI is very happy to be supporting the No Falls Foundation. As a responsible, UK-based manufacturer, it is our intent to ensure that people who use access equipment do so safely and by working alongside this charity we believe that message will reach the right people.
— Andy Ferris, Commercial Director

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people across different industries and sectors are working at height. Some industries, for example, construction, roofing, and facilities management are more noticeably obvious than others that these roles require working at height on a day-to-day basis. However, what about those working in a not-so-obvious industry like the retail sector, school or hospital staff, factory workers, or office employees? What is it that these people all have in common with each other? Risk. The risk of a fall. That risk is been often undertaken without ever realising they are in danger. A fall from height could lead to a serious life-changing injury, with the potential to have devastating consequences or even death.

According to figures published by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), during the five-year period 2015/16 – 2019/20 falls from height in the workplace accounted for an average of 34 fatal injuries per year. That’s a huge 25% of the total 171 fatal injuries over this period. Falls from height are not just the most common cause of fatal injury either. They also accounted for an estimated 38,800 non-fatal injuries to workers each year, which gives a saddening average of 106 injuries every day.

The No Falls Foundation believes research and the sharing of knowledge and information is an essential part of preventing accidents and falls. The Foundation promotes, undertakes, encourages, and funds research – in particular behavioural-based and cultural safety which aims to make working at height safer. The research is underpinned using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, to better understand the way people think and act.

The Foundation also advocates the need for, and is working towards, a more comprehensive system of accident reporting, designed to provide additional information and more detail about the nature and causes of falls from height. This would help shape and inform height safety and help to prevent falls and injuries in the future.

Providing grants to improve the testing and design of equipment, products, methods, and techniques is also part of what the No Falls Foundation continues to do. This work all contributes to the prevention or reduced risk of the likelihood of falls, or it eliminates the need for working at height wherever possible.
